Widely regarded as one of the greatest athletes in history, Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympian of all time with 22 total medals, 18 of them gold. No one else is even close. Phelps' became the first American male swimmer to qualify for four Olympic Games and his career is highlighted by the greatest individual performance in Olympic history when he won eight gold medals and set seven world records at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Along with his staggering list of accomplishments, Phelps was recently named Associated Press’ Top Male Athlete of 2012, an award he also won in 2008. In addition to his successful swim career, Phelps has written two books. Beneath the Surface: My Story and No Limits: The Will to Succeed. After the 2008 Summer Olympics, Phelps started the Michael Phelps Foundation, which focuses on growing the sport of swimming and promoting healthier lifestyles. |
